Prime Minister visits El Salvador
Prime Minister Said Musa and a business delegation are completing an official visit to El Salvador. Today, Musa met with Salvadoran President Francisco Flores and the two leaders signed a memorandum of understanding to create a bi-national commission, as well as an agreement for the promotion and protection of investments. In his speech of welcome, President Flores spoke of the strong ties between the two countries and of Belize’s generosity in allowing over thirty thousand Salvadorans to call it home. Before returning home on Wednesday, the Belizeans will be hosted tonight at an official state banquet. The move to strengthen ties with El Salvador comes at a particularly critical time for Belize when tensions along the border with Guatemala are running high over the recent shooting of three Guatemalans by Belizean security forces.
Just for the record, although President Flores referred to thirty thousand Salvadorans in Belize, the official 2000 census gives a figure of six thousand and twenty one.
