O.W. man turns trash into art
Tonight as another tribute to local producers, we feature one of our many talented artists. This Orange Walk man is hoping to turn a profit by putting a new face to discarded household materials. Ann-Marie has the story.

“I do a lot of Santa Claus designs. I do Christmas trees, I like the idea of doing background scenery like seascapes, but with the Christmas, merry Christmas or something. The toucans, season greetings, stuff like that on it that makes it a season gift and at the same time giving a Belizean flavour to it.”

Art teacher at Muffles College in Orange Walk Alginold Bennett, is hoping that you’ll want to capture the Belizean flavour when you purchase these inexpensive pieces for Christmas gifts. These small pieces are made not only to adorn your garment, they also serve other useful purposes.

“I have them set in way where I use ribbons and attach them together and they can be used as ornaments for the Christmas tree, or to decorate above a doorway or something like that, they can be used for key-holders. They’re a variety of different things that you can use them for. As you can see, this one has a pin at the back and it can be used for a brooch. This is very popular, the kids like to wear them.”
And what exactly are these fun accessories made of? As they say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

“There are some things that can be used that are out there. For example, the pins that we’re looking at are made from BTL cards. Such thinks like that tassels that used to be popular, the Pokeman things, that the kids are now throwing away, that’s what I use. And I think they make a really nice gift for the season.”
And if the pins aren’t your style, you can still buy a really nice gift for the season, providing you like Belize’s lovely landscapes.

“I like the mountains, the pine trees. I love to add water in my paintings, to see different colour water. I don’t stick to blue, water too much, I like the idea of reflections in the water, so you’ll see some of my paintings with a lot of colourful water in the area of green and brown.”
Bennett says much of his inspiration comes from just putting brush to canvas.

“I like reading National Geographic so much, that in the case of the landscapes, I can create one just out of my head. In the case of the pins, the drawings, I don’t need a picture to look at to draw, it just comes right out.”
