Muffles students compete in business world
While the sixth formers at SJC were celebrating their ethnicity, the students at Muffles College in Orange Walk were sharpening their skills for the world of work. News 5’s Jacqueline Woods has the story.

Every year the students of Muffles get to put aside their books and get involved in the practical side of life. To prepare for the Science and Business Fair, the young men and women sought advice from the business community where they received helpful tips to set up their displays.

“They have been visiting many places in Belize City and around Orange Walk. We have been to the Port Authority, to the Central Bank, B.S.I., they have visited Marie Sharp in Stann Creek. So all of these experiences they’re putting into practice today.”
The fictitious CienFuegos Pepper Sauce Company Limited, is one small business venture a group of fourth form students decided to create for their presentation.

“First of all, we have our labs, we tested our pepper, to see how much protein, how much fat if it has, and we also wash our bottles with boiling water, so that they’re clean. We also have the peeling of carrots, all the raw materials, which were pepper, carrots, onion, garlic and vinegar and some purified water. And we cut the raw materials, we boil them, them we blend it. after that, we transport it to the transport department where they will be poured into small bottles. They’re in charged of packaging it and delivering it, and this is our raw material product.”
Aside from the students and parents who toured the displays, judges were also on hand to grade the work. Each group did its best to pass the inspections and they believe the event will help them in their education and future careers.

“This is helping us so that we can work with each other. So that when we grow up, and have our high education that we can help each other. Then we can work in a company together and know that we can prosper in a business.”

“The main objective is that whenever they get ready to sit their CXC exams, they will be able to do it confidently.”

“It introduces them to the concept of research. It gives them the opportunity to go out and to get hands on what we can’t give them in the classroom.”
Other presentations included displays that featured the insurance and banking industries. Reporting for News 5, Jacqueline Woods.
This afternoon the judges handed in the results. In the Junior Division, Subway Franchise captured first place, while Cottage Industry took second. In the Senior Division, first place went to Business Consultation Firm, while Cienfuegos Pepper Sauce came in second.
