Local music makes a good Christmas gift

Story Picture
Earlier this week we looked at efforts of Government and local producers to supply the holiday demand for hams. Which got us thinking…why stop at food, when there are plenty of Christmas items that can be made right here in Belize. Tonight, Ann-Marie Williams begins a series of reports on what you can do to make this a truly Belizean Christmas.

This season why not give the gift of music, local music that is.

Henry Young Jr., Owner, Record Shack

“I would definitely like to see them buy more local CDs, because the international CDs sell about four or five to one. I would definitely like to see them buy more local CDs, because this year they came up with some pretty good music. Punta Rebels was very good this year, as well as Griga Boyz. Those are the top selling albums.”

According to Henry Young Jr., owner of Record Shack, at least eight new CDs have been added to the Belizean collection this year.

“We have Punta Rebels, Super G, Leelaa, Griga Boyz, Titiman. This would be a good time to purchase that local CD and keep your money here at home, and encourage the local musicians to do every better than they have been doing. So I would encourage people to buy local music for Christmas.”

C.Y.’s Music manager Colville Young Jr. says there are a few CDs produced especially for the Christmas season.

“It includes “Do You Know”, that’s a recent one by Mr. Robateau, and it’s a very nice one. It’s kind of along the Gospel side, which is very good for the occasion. Of course, there’s also Bradford Pattico and Valerie Lovell. They did a CD sometime ago, and now I’ve been trying to encourage the studio that work with them to bring it out because people have been asking for it, for so many years they have been asking.”

The Belize Chamber Group also has a CD, which includes the ever-popular “Good Morning Miss Lady.”

“And of course, my good old friend from down south, Leelaa. Leelaa has a very, very nice CD, “Ital”. Very nice combination of what we all do like at Christmas. So it doesn’t really Christmas a hundred percent, but as long as it is local and it is for local consumption, for local fun.”

Tomorrow we’ll look at more unique Belizean made gifts that will fit nicely under your Christmas tree. Local artisans and manufacturers who would like their products featured in future reports are invited to call Ann-Marie at 77781.
