3-year-old drowns in ferry accident
A three-year-old girl is dead as the result of a traffic mishap at the Baking Pot ferry in Cayo. Gianni Guerra was a passenger in a vehicle being driven by her father Elias Guerra and carrying her grandfather Juan Guerra Senior. The Guerra’s pickup truck was parked on the ferry, which had not yet left the south bank, when an out of control Toyota driven by Jesus Guzman careened down the hill toward the river and crashed into it. The collision knocked Guerra’s truck off the ferry and Guzman’s vehicle also went into the Belize River. And while the three adults managed to swim to safety, the baby was trapped in the vehicle and drowned. Her body was transported to the San Ignacio Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Viewers should note that it is policy that all occupants of vehicles using the ferry must wait outside their cars until the river is crossed so it is uncertain why the Guerra family were allowed to remain in their truck. At news time tonight, no charges have yet been filed against Jesus Guzman.
