Fire in City; Family says it was the work of arsonists.
On Thursday night, a fire destroyed a wooden house off Mahogany Street in Belize City. Firefighters were called out to Mahogany Street where they saw a twenty by thirty wooden house completely engulfed in flames. There were three occupants in the house, Jose Zelaya, his son and daughter. Eighteen-year-old Crystal Zelaya told police that she left home around six o’clock on Thursday and when she returned thirty minutes later her house was on fire. The house and all its contents were destroyed by the blaze. The value of the damage is not known at this time. Zelaya says that that the fire was no accident and that it was the work of arsonists. He alleges that a newspaper article wrongly quoted him and that has led to the attack. The Fire Department says that they are still investigating the fire and so we’ll have the official report on Monday.
