Fire Department shares fire safety tips!

During these coming months, bush fires are common across the country. Today the Fire Department shared tips on how you can help to prevent these fires from causing loss of life and property. They say it is important that you maintain your immediate surroundings cut low to the ground and to exercise caution when there is a fire in your area. It is not advised for residents in the urban areas to burn garbage or other materials, as it is prohibited and can cause a serious threat if not properly contained and handled. Here’s the advice from the Fire Department.

“In the dry season, they should ensure that their property is well kept, cut to ground, particularly, close to their residence especially if the residence is made of wood. They should not stow any combustible material  close to the property and they should ensure that beyond the property, at least a three feet minimum and I would advise more,  a fire pass is established between their perimeter and the bushes. That would ensure that fires that burn up from the bushes does not run on to their perimeter and threaten their homes. For those who own plots of lands and like to burn, this has caused a number of damage because of unplanned activities where they seem to just jump out of bed with this mentality that land is dry and ready for burning; that unplanned activity cause this fire to burn not only their property but beyond their property with no proper management in place. To burn, you need to establish that you have cut the area, pile your garbage and ensure that you have mature individuals to monitor these burnings, have a drum of water, if you are going to be burning a lot then you burn in small piles that will be manageable and on days that are not very windy.”
