Belize City Council Accomplishments, 1 Year after Taking Office

This Friday will make the first anniversary since P.U.P. Mayor Bernard Wagner and his team took office at the Belize City Council. While the mayor has met many challenges, today, he reflected on his first year as head of the largest municipality in the country. Mayor Wagner spoke about the accomplishments.

“When you look back at what we inherited as a council; sixty percent of your budget already spent and still being able to achieve what we have achieved, I think it is remarkable our performance. We were able to meet all our financial obligations; not one day did we have any issues with our workers not being paid. You have never heard of any issue with garbage collection; that is something of the past. So those key areas, building capacity for the council, has been very important for us. We felt that when we stepped into that office last year around this time, there were not enough resources to carry out our mandate. And you clearly see where we have been able to get twelve vehicles to help us in our administration of the city. We feel also that we have been able to achieve some physical infrastructure. We were able to complete Raccoon Street; we completed Gibnut Street, we completed Allan Pitts Crescent. We are now moving into Ebony Street. We did A Street, we did Heusner Crescent. We did the Ring Road, huge street. We did Nursey Street; we are planning to do Nurse White as well and we just did Simon Lamb Street. So clearly, this council, despite the financial challenges we faced, I think we saw the challenges as an opportunity to do great things.”
