News 5 scores big in broadcasting awards
Belize has won big in this year’s Caribbean Broadcasting Awards. It was announced from Barbados today that Channel 5 took top honours in three television categories including Best News Feature, Best Environmental Feature and Best Sports Feature. The winning entry for the News and Environmental Awards was a story reported by Janelle Chanona on her descent into a sinkhole in the Cayo District, while James Adderley was cited for his work on “A Belizean in the NBA: The Milton Palacio Story.” Cameraman and editor on both winning efforts was Brent Toombs. Also singled out for second place honours was Bel Caribe Communications for its public service announcement for NOPCA on child abuse and Channel 5 for its series of investigative reports on Guatemala. The only other television station in the Caribbean to win more than one award was Cuba’s I.C.R.T. which took three top prizes in television, one in radio and was also given the president’s award for its contribution to the work of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union. The Caribbean Broadcasting Awards will be aired Wednesday night at 8:00 right here on Channel 5.
