U.B. sponsors forum on Sept. 11th effects
The world is still reeling from the social and economic ramifications of the September eleventh attacks, and like many other countries, Belize has been negatively impacted in the areas of tourism and investment. In that context, the University of Belize is holding a public forum called “In the eye of Turbulence” to discuss the current economic situation as well as recent developments in the communications and health sectors. Student co-ordinator Marilyn Pinelo says one of the aims of the forum is to increase the public’s awareness of issues of national relevance.

“We hope that people come out and clarify whatever they are not clear about. We find that there are certain concerns when it comes to trade, trade and investment, foreign exchange, a lot of rumours, and people are wondering about certain things. We find that this will be an opportunity to clarify those. As well, we find that the September eleventh…The series of events has had an impact on tourism and people are wondering, in the tourism industry, what is going to happen to our industry since this is one of the growing industries, one of the main foreign exchange winners.”
Guest speakers for the conference include Peter Usher, General Manager of BELTRAIDE, speaking on trade and investment; Glenn Godfrey, addressing the topic of the de-monopolisation of the telecommunications industry and Jose Coye on health reform. The forum will take place at the Radisson on Wednesday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
