Murder Victim’s Belongings Found; Police Looking for a Suspect
Since last week we’ve been reporting on the brutal killing of a young, pregnant mother Joan Gabourel from Valley of Peace, Cayo. She went missing and was found dead several days later on March third. She was stabbed, chopped and bludgeoned to death. As we told you, two persons were detained, including a relative on whose farm Gabourel’s nude, decomposing body was discovered. Now police say that both persons have been released, but one was charged for a separate matter. The other development in the case is that Gabourel’s bicycle and some other personal belongings were found in the area. Today, ACP Joseph Myvett of the National Crimes Investigation Branch told the media that Gabourel’s uncle has not cooperated with police but they are looking for another suspect and hope to close in on the killer or killers soon.
ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch
“From those persons who were detained, one person was charged for cultivation of cannabis. He has been granted bail and the police investigation continues and that area is still being treated as a crime scene. Officers are still on the ground today trying to gather further evidence. So far, certain other evidence were found, since we last met. I believe the bicycle was recovered among other items. The bike was recovered not too far away from the same vicinity of the scene. It was in the bushes. We are trying to determine if the other items belong to her.”
Reporter
“Sir, we have received reports that among these items that police recovered were blood stained clothing; are you able to confirm?”
ACP Joseph Myvett
“Yes and those, I believe, will be sent to the lab later this week. Yes we are seeking one other suspect in relation to this investigation.”
Reporter
“Do you all believe that you may be close to an arrest or that is way far off?”
ACP Joseph Myvett
“Well that is dependent on the investigation.”
Andrea Polanco
“There was a person who was stalking Ms. Gabourel. From what we have since learnt is that that person moved from Valley of Peace and is now in northern Belize. Is he being questioned in connection with her murder?”
ACP Joseph Myvett
“Yes. We are trying to locate that person as we speak.”
Reporter
“So, at this time you haven’t been able to contact him and is he wanted?”
ACP Joseph Myvett
“No we haven’t been able to contact him and yes he is wanted in connection with the investigation.”
Reporter
“Do you all suspect that he is on the run from police at this time – it is too coincidental?”
ACP Joseph Myvett
“Yes he has moved out of the area so that is why we are trying to find him.”
