Canadian resident busted in San Pedro bank heist

In what amounts to one of the more bizarre crimes in the colourful history of Ambergris Caye, this afternoon, San Pedro police successfully foiled a hold-up attempt at the Atlantic Bank. Around 1:30, officers were informed by the bank manager that they were being robbed. The police quickly dispatched a team to the bank where they observed a man holding a gun and a suspicious parcel. To their credit, the officers managed to cautiously approach the suspect and apprehended him. Unlike your typical Belizean desperado, the man, identified as forty-three year old Garry Daniel Hart, is a Canadian national who apparently has been living on the island since August. Police say when they took Hart into custody they found a note on him which demanded that the bank hand over between thirty and forty thousand U.S. dollars. At this time, authorities are examining the parcel and would not comment on its contents. According to police, they do not know what Hart has been doing on the island since he arrived and he is currently being interrogated at the San Pedro police station. Sources in San Pedro describe Hart as exhibiting somewhat eccentric behaviour…but that description could fit many of that community’s residents.
