Child Abuse Prevention Week starts today
This year alone, the number of child abuse cases News 5 has had to report is truly disheartening. But all the reports are actually a good sign, a sign that children are speaking out, a vital step in the prevention of child abuse. This week is Child Abuse Prevention Week, being held under the theme “Remember the Children: Their innocence is in danger.” While the emphasis will be on prevention and awareness, the National Organisation for the Prevention of Child Abuse, NOPCA, will also focus on education of what abuse is, especially for parents.
Lavern Castillo, Youth Co-ordinator, NOPCA
“These are parents that we would not normally meet in our regular sessions, like in the clinics or at workshops. So we’ve decided to go into the communities to meet with them, speak with to them on a one on one basis, and just certain things that they can do to help their children if they are suspected of being abused. If you are being abused, you report it to anyone, no matter who, until someone listens to you and until you get the satisfaction that you deserve as a child.”
NOPCA will be hosting a series of workshops for parents and children throughout the week in every district.
