Drug Plane Crashes South of Quintana Roo; 1 Person Killed

A small plane carrying one ton of cocaine crash landed into fields in the community of San Pedro Peralta, south of Quintana Roo, Mexico. One person was reportedly killed. Mexican media is reporting that before midnight on Sunday, a plane was reportedly flying low in the area. The Cessna type aircraft that is commonly being used in the illicit drug trade is said to have been tracked via radar leaving an area in southern Belize near the Sarstoon and Temash area. According to the Mexican Federal Authorities, the radar lost track of the plane for a period of half an hour in the northernmost part of Belize, near the bay of Chetumal, but was later picked up one kilometre south of the bay. The report goes on to say that twelve kilometres from San Pedro Peralta, the aircraft began experiencing mechanical failure and crashed into a field.  Members of the thirty-fourth Military Zone were dispatched to the area, which was cordoned off. While their identities have not been disclosed at this time, Linea de Fuego Quintana Roo reports that the pilot was critically injured and was transferred to the military hospital of Chetumal; a passenger was discovered dead inside the wrecked aircraft. It is believed that the one ton of cocaine that was found at the crash site was heading to the United States. Today at its weekly press briefing, police refused to comment on the incident because although the plane reportedly left from southern Belize, it did not crash land in Belize.
