Suspects charged in record drug bust
Police have officially charged five people, four men and one women in connection with the trafficking of three thousand, three hundred and seventy-eight pounds of cocaine found in an apartment on the Northern Highway on Tuesday morning. They are thirty-eight year old Belizean Liston McCord, Oscar Moreno Aguirra, twenty-seven, Zulema Carrasco, twenty-five and Jorge Carlos Moreno, thirty-eight years old, all Mexicans. A seventeen-year-old minor of Belize City, along with McCord’s wife Jenny were also charged with drug trafficking. Jorge Carlos Moreno was also charged with dealing in uncustomed goods and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Reports are that on Monday night the drugs were hurriedly dug up from their hiding place on an unnamed island in order to protect them from Hurricane Iris. Apparently, the men took the load to the Northern Highway apartment where police found them guarding the cocaine with guns. In addition to the big stash, three sacks of cocaine were also found in a white van registered to Jenny McCord. The lone Mexican who rented the apartment also had a room at the Princess Hotel where it is believed police found over six thousand U.S. dollars. All five people have been remanded to the Hattieville Prison until November first. Only the seventeen-year-old minor and Jenny McCord have been granted bail of fifty thousand dollars each plus one surety of the same amount.
