Driver runs roadblock, shot by police
A high-speed police chase on Tuesday has left one Belmopan man dead. According to police, officers at a road block set up between mile seventy-one and seventy-two report that around 3:00 p.m., they were checking vehicles driving through the checkpoint. However, as they were doing so, they noticed that one car had stopped and was in the process of reversing to avoid them. A car chase ensued through the village of Succotz and pulled a three sixty, returning to the site of the road block. The lead vehicle then attempted to run through the blockade. Officers say they fired a warning shot but when the car did not stop, fired again, hitting the driver in the chest. The vehicle ran off the road and the driver later died. He has been identified as Michael Hyde of Belmopan. A police investigation into the officer’s actions has been launched. It is not known what might have been the motive for Hyde’s actions.
