Over the next week, “wiser” men and women throughout Belize will be honoured with a series of activities as part of “Older Persons Week.” According to Santos Diaz, second vice-president of Helpage Belize, the activities at the Sister Cecilia Home for the Elderly are aimed at adding life to their years.

“You have fellowships, you have the question of physical exercises, handicrafts, getting together, knowing each other and this kind of things. Every year a person is recognised. Not necessarily in the home, but from the community we recognise a senior citizen.”

“Why should Belizeans join in to celebrate “Older Persons Week?”

Santos Diaz

“It’s quite obvious that if we never had older persons we wouldn’t have young ones. They are the roots to the beginning of generations. Those are the people that should be respected, nurtured and loved, because they are the root to the whole generation of Belize.”

“Older Persons Week”, officially opens on Monday with a ceremony for seniors at the Helpage Belize Centre on Wilson Street in Belize City.
