Cyclists Meet to Chart Way Forward

Tariq Cano

The Cycling Federation of Belize is facing mounting criticisms by several cyclists and aficionados of the sport. A meeting between cyclists and attorneys took place on Thursday night to discuss the many issues they have with the governing body following the Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic.  Cyclist Tariq Cano was part of that meeting and says that building frustration prompted the group of athletes to meet in order to form an entity that would address the needs of the athletes.

“All these people are people who want to see cycling move forward. We are trying our best to evaluate the current situation and move forward without any major issues. We are not fighting with our federation or the current body anymore. We don’t have time for that. We just need the betterment of the sport so get on it on our own.”

Hipolito Novelo

“However, it is expected that this group would rival the Cycling Federation of Belize.”

Tariq Cano

“Maybe it would rival in certain ways, maybe it is a good thing because once you do more maybe they will challenge us in doing better and that is fine. I would certainly welcome the fact that if they want to do better in what they are doing, it would only benefit the development of cycling in Belize.”

Hipolito Novelo

“Ok, so why create another group when you can work with the existing federation?”

Tariq Cano

“I mean, everybody knows the work that myself has been doing for the past years and Kaya Cattouse. If they want they could have reached out to us and help and support. They haven’t. If you really, maybe they don’t have the time. I don’t know what is the case but in my eyes if you want proper development you shouldn’t wait for an invitation to do better.”

Hipolito Novelo

“So the idea of creating a new entity is backed up by how many persons, specifically cyclists?”

Tariq Cano

“Well the talk around town is that majority of cyclists are now onboard.”
