Wasani Castro Fighting Disqualification from HSCCC
Cyclist Wasani Castro is challenging his disqualification from the Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic. He has retained the services of Attorney Hector Guerra, who has written to the President of the Cycling Federation of Belize, Orson Butler. As we have reported, Castro was disqualified following a meeting of the race commissairies who viewed footage which shows Castro holding on to his team’s vehicle between miles forty-seven and forty-eight on the George Price Highway. Castro was stripped of the twelfth placement and fined one hundred dollars. In the letter, Guerra tells Butler that according to the constitution and bylaws of the federation, the disciplinary committee is required to hold an inquiry into a complaint against a member before any sanction is imposed. Guerra says the federation sanctioned Castro without providing him the requisite due process. He also claims that Castro was never given an opportunity to defend the charge and that constitutes a flagrant violation of his rights. According to Guerra, Castro suffered an accident and was being treated while he held on to the pickup truck. Castro is demanding that he be given an urgent date for a proper hearing before fair and impartial adjudicators.
