Musicians were not the only ones at the House of Culture today and Jacqueline Woods took the opportunity to speak to a few of the facility’s younger visitors.

It may not be on the September celebrations calendar of events, but primary school students have been taking time out of their classrooms and visiting a number exhibitions. Today the Social Studies class of Queen Square Anglican School was at the House of Culture getting a view of Belize’s past and present, courtesy of the Archives Department.

Jovannie Lozano, 12 years old

“Well I have been getting how the Baymen won the fight against the Spaniards and how we got our Independence, how many times the Spaniards attack the Baymen and chased them off St. George’s Caye. Mostly I have been researching about the year and all that happened; in what year they fought, when the PUP political party formed.”

Ebony Cattouse, 13 years old

“Basically here today I am learning about George Price as the father of our nation. And I think it is a wonderful thing and experience for the children today to find out more information about him.”

Keisha Young, Teacher, Queen Square Anglican

“For a couple of weeks now we have been looking at the history of our nation. I personally felt that it wasn’t enough for us to just talk about it in the classroom. You could never bring these images that are behind us to the classroom, so it was important for me to bring them here.”

Students, if you would like to go to the exhibition, there is no need to worry. The display by the Archives Department at the House of Culture will run until September twenty-eight. Reporting for News 5, Jacqueline Woods.
