John Saldivar Urges U.D.P. to ‘Embrace the Inevitable Competition for Leadership’

With the referendum results showing a strong YES in favour of the U.D.P. position, it’s silly season in the party.  Now, Prime Minister Barrow will also be making his exit as leader.  First to jump out on Friday night was U.D.P. Belmopan area rep John Saldivar, who took to Facebook to remind his party that he will offer himself for the position of leader of the United Democratic Party. In fact, Saldivar has called on the U.D.P. to “get it over with.” Saldivar, who has long since expressed his desire to lead, has to defeat candidates such as the Deputy Party Leader Patrick Faber. Those two are the official candidates who have made it known that they will contend the party’s leadership convention.  Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte is said to have also be considering a challenge, but is yet to win a division.  In his post, Saldivar made it quite clear that while there are those who want an easy transition to avoid open bloodletting, the leadership of the U.D.P. cannot result from “an assumption that there is some rite of passage to leadership for any candidate.” Saldivar urges his party to embrace the inevitable competition for leadership. Today, we asked Santino Castillo Junior who he will be supporting.

“No, I have not made up my mind whom I will support as yet, but you know the old saying; help those who help you. I’ll leave it at that.”
