Kolbe C.E.O. Says Trend of Prison Escapes Broken

On April thirtieth, an inmate lost his life while trying to escape from the Belize Central Prison.  Nineteen-year-old Kevin Moore, a resident of Punta Gorda was shot and killed by prison officers when he made a dash for freedom.  During the incident, the teenager managed to scale the perimeter fence after escaping from Tango Six, but he wouldn’t get far.  Moore was shot twice in both legs and was recaptured approximately three hundred meters away from the facility in a clump of bushes.  Regrettably, Moore succumbed to the injuries received during the incident, as he bled to death while being rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.  Earlier today, Chief Executive Officer Virgilio Murillo, of the Kolbe Foundation, provided an update on their review of the incident.

“We looked at the situation, like I said the last time, we can’t really say who was escaping at that time so we just had to do what we had to do as a prison.  Escapes is certainly not something that should happen from a prison and when a prisoner tries to scale the fence they all run the risk of being shot and killed.  We tried to disable for the most part but if it doesn’t happen then it doesn’t happen, it’s unfortunate.  We have looked at our procedures and we have definitely ramped up security, no doubt about it and we don’t expect any other escape to take place.  If you notice, yesterday was Tuesday and we’ve been having these escapes successively every Tuesday for the last three weeks.  Well yesterday was Tuesday and thank God it looked like the trend has been broken and we plan to keep it that way, no doubt about it.”
