Still no water in San Pedro
While industry officials are bullish on tourism, hotel operators and residents of San Pedro are raising hell about the continued lack of water at the nation’s number one tourist destination: Ambergris Caye. Although they were promised water by six p.m. on Tuesday, twenty-four hours later, San Pedranos’ pipes were still dry–as they have been since Monday morning. Manager of Belize Water Limited, Jim Kavanagh, told News 5 that the company’s two pumps broke down within six weeks of each other and engineers were attempting to make temporary repairs until a new gearbox arrives from the States on Tuesday. He expected the fix to be effected by tonight, but residents remain angry and unconvinced. Also not too pleased is Belize Water Services Limited. That company, the privately owned successor to WASA, is bound by a pre-existing contract to purchase the desalinised water at what is considered to be an outrageously high price…and now must also put up with three days of non-existent supply.
