Story Picture
With the rising cost of education these days, more than a few parents have been pinching pennies; especially at this time of the year. Unfortunately for some, even that doesn’t help and many children are compelled to enter the workforce sooner than planned. In an effort to alleviate this problem, today B.T.L. awarded thirteen lucky teenagers with full scholarships to the high school of their choice.

Ediberto Tesucum, CEO, Belize Telecommunications Ltd.

“It is our commitment to continue providing scholarships to young people in Belize. To this date, we have a hundred and seventy-five scholarships that we have granted. Today in school with the thirteen scholarship recipients, we will have a total of sixty-five that are in high school. We hope that they will do their best and that that will help them form a career for themselves.”

As to the rest of the student population, the Ministry of

Education says it is trying it’s best to make education in Belize cheaper.

Dr. Dorian Barrow, CEO, Ministry of Education

“We’re trying to become more efficient, and that means making more investments in terms of teacher training, so that people can get more effective education, increasing student teacher ratio, assisting schools in creating bigger classrooms, curriculum. We’re also trying to standardise textbooks, which is a tremendous expense area. We feel that if we can come with a standardise set of texts in high school, we can benefit from the economic scale and drive the cost down.”
