Accused burglars tied to O.W. supermarket heist
Three men detained for breaking into an Orange Walk gas station early Tuesday morning are now the prime suspects in the burglary of a nearby supermarket. As happened with the Shell One-Stop Gas Station, the proprietor of M and A Supermarket in Orange Walk told police that upon opening the business on Tuesday he discovered that the cash register was missing along with a cash pan containing over five thousand dollars, a box of batteries and twenty-four packs of diapers. Those diapers may prove to be the undoing of Anthony and Augustine Montes and Moises Williams, as when they were apprehended at a guest house in Belize City, they just happened to be in the possession of a quantity of pampers, not to mention almost seventeen thousand dollars in cash and four thousand, five hundred dollars worth of B.T.L. phone cards. The additional loot is believed to have been stolen from the gas station, which was hit for a total of twenty-one thousand dollars in Belizean cash, twenty-seven hundred in U.S. currency and almost nine thousand in phone cards. The Montes brothers and Williams were jointly charged today in Orange Walk Magistrate’s Court with the crimes of burglary and handling stolen goods. The men were denied bail and more charges may follow.
