Weekend crime leaves three more dead
We usually gather at a wake to pay respects to the dead…but on Sunday in Dangriga, it became an occasion for murder. Forty year old Davis Martinez is said to have been attending a nine night at a home in the Lakeland area when he got into a fight with another man identified as fifty-three year old Crispino Diego. Martinez was stabbed several times to his abdomen and chest. Police later arrested and charged Diego with murder.
A melee at a Belize City bar has left one man dead and several detained pending investigations. Eighteen year old Sergio Sanchez was at Arrecife Bar and Restaurant on North Front Street with three friends when they became involved in a fight with two other patrons. When the dust cleared, Sanchez and his companions: twenty-two year old Juan Lazaro, eighteen year old Eric Sanchez and twenty-three year old Manuelito de Jesus Castillo, had all received stab wounds. Sanchez later died at the K.H.M.H. while undergoing medical treatment. The other two men, eighteen year Danny Ponce and twenty-four year old Oswald Jimenez escaped uninjured. All five men have been held by police and at this time, apparently all they are saying is that there was a fight.
A Canadian student vacationing on Calabash Caye died on Friday shortly after embarking on a snorkelling expedition. Thirty-year-old Christopher Wysiekierski went out around noon with three other people to snorkel just off the island, located on the windward side of Turneffe, and disappeared below the surface. His body was later recovered by a search party and taken to the K.H.M.H. The results of a post-mortem have not yet been released.
The discovery of the body of a man on the Southern Highway has led police to detain six people. On Sunday morning police say they visited the stretch of road between Kendal and Maya Centre, near mile thirteen, and found the body of a Hispanic man with large cut wounds to the back of the head, throat, mouth and arm, lying on the road. The unidentified corpse was taken to the morgue at the Southern Regional Hospital where it awaits a post-mortem. No arrests have yet been made.
