Deer production gets a boost
Belizeans and tourists who like to dine on venison may get some good news as a programme to boost production of farmed deer is getting off the ground. A herd of twenty fallow deer imported to Central Farm in February has given birth to thirteen fawns, which will be ready for market by the end of the year. The meat fetches high prices for producers and the project is expected to take the hunting pressure off our dwindling stock of white-tailed deer in the wild. Farmers interested in raising deer should contact their district agricultural office or the livestock section at Central Farm.
