Belize City port to be privatised
While the latest session of Cabinet focussed on the crime problem, that body also took some other decisions that will have major impact on the nation’s future. It was confirmed that the Belize City port, long rumoured to be the next candidate for privatisation, will in fact be put on the block. Government will retain a regulatory function, while the operation of the port will be placed in the hands of the private sector. It is contemplated that a free zone will also be set up within an expanded port compound. Of the three commercial ports in Belize, the one at Big Creek is already under private control, while Commerce Bight and Belize City are currently operated by the Belize Ports Authority. While the city port will be sold, the facility at Commerce Bight, which primarily services the citrus industry, is expected to be leased.
