Police receive help from Florida
While the daily litany of media reports may sometimes make us feel that the crime problem is insurmountable, government continues to seek solutions and upgrade the quality of law enforcement. As a result of a trip last week to the United States by National Security Minister Jorge Espat, Police Commissioner Hughington Williams and Chief Forensic Analyst Jovita Marin, some help may be on the way. After meetings with officials of the Indian River, Florida, County Sheriff’s Department that force has agreed to provide Belize access to training, consulting and laboratory services. Indian River Sheriff Roy Raymond is responsible for policing a wide area containing 115,000 residents. He has at his disposal, however, 450 employees, 160 vehicles, a K-9 unit and air wing.
