Three contracts signed for Belize City drainage
Three more contracts were signed this morning under the I.D.B. financed Hurricane Rehabilitation Project. They focus on the improvement of Belize City’s drainage and involve the construction of several new canals and improvement of others. Present for the signing were I.D.B. representative Hugo Souza, Ministry of Economic Development CEO Nancy Namis and Mayor David Fonseca.
David Fonseca, Mayor, Belize City
“The three contracts that were signed this morning covers areas of the North Creek Canal and Prisoner Creek Canal and the Lakeview Street Canal that will be extended to hook up with the Prisoner Creek Canal. North Creek also will be dredged and an addition to it will be made, which will be lined and covered. And on the other side there is one contract, the one that was awarded to Cisco will be dealing with the canal that runs in the national stadium, so that will be improved upon. And also the canal that runs parallel with St. John’s College from University Drive to the sea, that also will be improved upon and the canal that exists presently by the fire station that will also be worked on to widen that canal in order to take in more water. They’ve found that there is a lot of water coming off to that canal from the King’s Park area to handle at this time so the idea is to widen that one to take in the greater capacity.”

“Do you have any future plans to deal with areas such as Belama, which is prone to flood?”
David Fonseca
“I am sure that down the road it’s being looked at already. It should have been part of this one for Belama. We always encounter a problem especially where the road intersects with Grace Kennedy in that area there. There’s is always serious flooding and there is a proposed canal to go in there in the very near future to empty into the sea to solve that problem. Then there are other areas in phase three of Belama that is being looked at to see how we can drain that area more rapidly.”
Two contracts, totalling three point five million dollars, went to Johnston International, while one for one point three million was signed with Cisco Construction. Fonseca says that there will be additional contracts signed in the next few weeks that will include work on a canal in the Junesville area of Lake Independence and on Mahogany Street to connect with the administration canal.
