Nigerian security guard shot in robbery attempt

A security guard on duty at a Belize City meat shop clings to life after thwarting a robbery on Saturday afternoon. Thirty-six year old Nigerian, Daniel Akigoyoubi, an employee of J and B Security Service was working at Southside Meats on Albert Street West when at about 12:20, three dark skinned men entered the shop and asked for cigarettes. Their politeness ended when one of the men pulled out a handgun and pointed it to the side of Akigoyoubi’s head while another clutched him by the waist. The guard, who was armed only with a club, struggled with all three men and the fight spilled out in front of the building. There the outnumbered officer was shot four times, resulting in injuries to his stomach, leg and hand. The trio escaped without taking any loot and Akigoyoubi was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition. Police have detained one man in connection with the shooting.
