YMCA offers summer activities
The YMCA is helping to ensure that Belizean school children will have less idle time on their hands this summer by planning a series of programmes and camps. Primary School Education co-ordinator Dorian Staine says the first classes begin on July second at the Y’s offices on Eve Street in Belize City.

“We are offering the programme for primary school students. We will be doing new enrolment in September, and we want to offer them courses in math, English and writing essays, for the new upcoming school year, to give them a brief idea of what it will be like for the upcoming school year.”
Ann-Marie Williams
“Who can attend these programmes? Why is there a need to do a remedial type programme of this nature?”
Dorian Staine
“Normally during the summer, students are out on the streets and to link from that, we want to offer programmes that might be educational. It is for any primary school student who are in the Standard one level up to high school preparatory, that can be a part of this programme.”
Ann-Marie Williams
“What time is it running?”
Dorian Staine
“From Standard one to three, it’ll be from 8:30 to 11:30 in the mornings. For standard four to six, it’ll be from 1:30 to 4:30 in the evenings.”

“The swimming camp is an annual part of the Y’s programme also, tell me what’s different about the camp this year.”
Dorian Staine
“What’s different is that we want to include now from three year old skippers to be a part of our swimming programme. You know normally we have it at the Pickwick club, and the times remain the same, which is an hour for each class. The only thing now is that we’ll be having it for two months, which is July and August.”
Those interested in taking part in the swimming camp can call the YMCA at telephone 02-31514 during working hours.
