Meet Belize’s Beach Volleyball Teams

Bryton Codd

At today’s press conference, the press also met team Belize. There are six athletes competing for Belize. They are divided into three teams; two males and one female. They have been coached by Cuban Juan Carlos Perdomo.  According to the BVA, these teams are experienced and skilled and have played against some of their competitors. The last time Belize medaled in the Beach Volleyball games in Central America was in 1997 with a bronze. But if left up to these players, they want to break that dry spell this year. Here’s more from the three teams.

Bryton Codd, Athlete, Belize Male Team 1

“We look forward to this tournament because know that the sport is growing. We know that there is an interest now in the sport. We know that we have the support from our community, our association, our parents and we know that we can do well because we have put in the work. We have been training from three to six every single day; Monday is rest day and then gym in the morning. We have seen our level of play increase over the past few months.”

Edgar Martinez

“We are looking forward to come out of our group at the number spot, nothing less. We are going out there to work and play hard.”

Francis Hauze

Francis Hauze, Athlete, Belize Male Team 1

“My focus is just to stay mentally prepared and try to keep the same intensity as Bryton. My goal is to win the tournament.”

Michael Jenkins

Michael Jenkins, Athlete, Belize Male Team 2

“We look forward to win the Guatemala because we have the Guatemala Team 1 in our group and so we look forward to play them because they are one of the stronger teams. That is one of the games that we really want to win. Also, the Nicaragua team; my goal is to beat them because when we went to the U-21 Championship they are the team that came in first and Francis and I never got a chance to play them and it’s a team we really wanted to play.”

Emma Hoare

“My expectation is to have team Belize fight hard and try to put up a tough game against the powerhouse Nicaragua Team.”

Clara Sabal

“We just want to show the work that we have been putting in. I have been playing volleyball for the national team indoor for Belize for at least nine years. And just the level of improvement we have seen from BVA and volleyball in general in Belize, it is uplifting to want to continue that work and effort.”
