Farmers Were Informed of Continuous Drought

Data collected from the National Meteorological Service of Belize confirms a short-term drought developing over the Corozal, Orange Walk and northern Belize Districts. This drought is gravely affecting the farmers across the districts and causing great financial loss. The below-average rainfall, however, was predicted by the Met Service and the affected areas are under a short-term drought warning.  Climatologist Ronald Gordon says that farmers were warned.

“The drought situation that has come up from us is not something that came up suddenly. We have been seeing signals for this from earlier in the year and we have been updating our products in terms of alerting the public in our website. We also had our national climate outlook forum in early June whereby we had stakeholders like farmers and other stakeholders to come to us. We informed them. We told them what are looking at below normal rainfall for the next few months and we told them what the implications were. So I am saying this I am hoping that farmers would have taken adequate measures to prepare for what would have been the impact of the drought.”
