City Hall Moves to Commercial Center

The Belize City Council is moving City Hall and its operations to the Commercial Center at Market Square, a year and a half into the term of Mayor Bernard Wagner and the People’s United Party municipal government.  The quiet transition began a few weeks ago and is set to be completed this weekend.  Despite the completion of works in 2018, the refurbished building remained unused. According to Communications Manager Tamara Minto, the old City Hall on North Front Street will see the relocation of the municipal court in the months ahead.  The move, she says, comes with its share of challenges.

“We’re still in the process, we haven’t completely moved.  On Friday, we will be closing our cashiers at the old City Hall at twelve o’clock and on this weekend we are transitioning the last amount of departments to the new city hall building.  We will open for business to the public on Monday.  The transition, obviously we are a large municipality and the amount of departments and offices, moving all of the internet services it is a challenge; however, we did it piece by piece and this is the last possible department that we needed to move in order to have less inconvenience to our residents.”

“What’s gonna become of the old building?  I know it’s sort of like a landmark on the North Front Street stretch.  What happens with that building?”

“That’s still a landmark.  That will be the municipal court.  That will soon and eventually be the municipal court.  As of now, the municipal court will still be operational at its existing building, but once we do some retrofitting to the old city hall then the municipal court will then move there.”
