Annual Back-to-School Trimming Drive is Here Again!
In its ninth year, the annual Back-to-School Trimming Drive is here once again and primary and high school students from across south side Belize City are looking forward to spending their last summer weekend preparing for the start of a new school year next Monday. Organizers Edmond Staine and Brian Dena have managed to collect as many stationeries as they can with assistance from various donor agencies. But they are a few items short and are appealing to the public to help with a few additional schoolbags, books and footwear. Earlier today, we caught up with Staine, who told us all about this year’s drive.

“It’s the ninth year we’re doing the Back-to-School Trimming Drive on Faber’s Road and we’re actually looking to try to get more support, that’s why we reached out to you guys to try to get an interview done because based on projections right now we are falling short on some of the school supplies that we are doing. The entire event is happening, the grounds are all already set up and we have sponsors that have given us the tents and the hair products and that sort of stuff. That’s all covered. The food is covered for the volunteers for the day and also for the people that are going to participate, but we definitely would try to get more school supplies so we can provide more to the kids.”

“So who would you be appealing to for this kind of assistance?”
Edmond Staine
“Well anybody that has access to schoolbags, backpacks, books and pens. Sometimes we need sneakers for the kids. Some of the kids, their parents come up to us and say, you know my child is going back to school but they don’t have a tennis shoe or somebody doesn’t have a particular textbook that they may need that’s costly or they can’t find it, you know. So anything that provides that ease towards the people of the south side, we definitely want to do that. We’re not reaching out for money at this time, we’re just reaching out for the items, so if you guys have the items to give then please reach out to us, you know and we’ll be able to provide it for the kids. One thing we don’t want is to have the event and then people to come up and then we can’t be able to give to everybody. So far, for all the eight years that we’ve been doing it we’ve been able to provide it for everyone on the ground. So we want to continue on that trend and make sure that we can bless as much people as possible.”
