The splendor of the King and Queen Competition in Carnival 2019
September is known for its pageantry and its formalities and for the Belize Carnival Association, it is no different. What Queen of the Bay is to the tenth of September Celebrations, the King & Queen Competition is to Belize’s Carnival. This past Saturday night, the competing bands for this year’s Carnival graced the stage at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex. Five Junior Mas bands and Five Seniors dazzled the viewers with their monarchs as they played Mas to the pulsating bacchanal music. It was a night of mind blowing creativity, innovation and talent as the costumes showcased the master pieces of Belize’s very own designers. As the revelers competed for the Carnival crown, the judges were looking for costume durability, mobility, creativity, colour scheme and how well the costumes were portrayed. But what is carnival without controversy, in the midst of all the entertainment, there was one Senior band that claimed that the wrong music was played during their Queen’s performance. The Head Judge then decided to announce the winners today pending verification from their auditors. Up to news time, the results remain pending, but here are the sights and sound of this year’s Carnival King and Queen.
