New CD released by Bredda David

Story Picture
Belizean musicians have often been criticised for blatantly copying songs or at least the styles of foreign artists. But no one will ever accuse Dangriga’s Bredda David of imitation. David, the creator of Kungo music, has been combining Caribbean rhythms with his African heritage for the past thirty years. He recently dropped by Channel 5 for an update on his latest musical release, produced with the help of his sons.

Bredda David Obi, Creator, Kungo Music

“At this time now, me and my two sons from the band, Tribal Vibes, recorded these three songs and these are the songs that we bring to the people for them to listen to. Nkrumah Obi the drummer from Tribal Vibes, “Watch you Move.” David Obi the second, better known to us as Indio from the group “Wood Dwellas.” His song is “Mother Nature’s Best Kept Secret” and my song, “Pressing on” because really that is exactly what we’re doing. We keep pressing on, moving on.”

David Obi Jr., Musician

“Me and my brother Nkrumah Obi, big up at the same time. We are slowly taking over the Kungo Music. I know my father will always be there, but we are slowly taking over the physical part of it and producing part of it. It’s going to evolve to whatever it is. I don’t know. I can’t tell you, it keeps evolving. It’s not gonna stop, music never stop, at least not Kungo Music.”

Bredda David

“I’ve been playing in bands for thirty years and I have my own band now for at least twenty years. So we are reaping the fruits of long hard work over a period of time.”

David, who recorded the album at his Dobi recording studio in Dangriga, says that the CD, due to out soon, will cost twenty-five to thirty dollars.
