Belize & Guatemala present oral arguments at OAS
Presentations of oral arguments by Belize and Guatemala continued today at the Organisation of American States in Washington D.C. In replies to questions posed by Belizean negotiators, Guatemala has made it clear that contrary to their earlier arguments they still maintain a claim to the entire country, and not just the land south of the Sibun River. When asked how they could then respect the self-determination of a nation that would posses no territory, the Guatemalans requested a month to formulate a reply. The talks will conclude tomorrow with discussions on recent confidence building measures along the border. At some point soon the two facilitators, Sir Shridath Ramphal and Paul Reichler, will deliver their recommendations on the way forward.
