John Briceño: “We need to strengthen democracy in this country”

The trove of documents showing apparent voter padding raises the question if the countrywide re-registration exercise fulfilled its purpose which was to clean the voters list. The problem, evidently, still exists. Today, a release from the Elections and Boundaries issued a statement placing responsibility on politicians. It states that the Representation of the People’s Act clearly outlines the process and steps that are required to be taken before any individual becomes a registered elector. Opposition Leader John Briceño says that the laws need to be strengthened to prevent irregular voters’ registration.

“There are several things that also need to be done. I can assure that we will change the law, strengthened the law to make it more difficult to have these phantom houses or where they can be registered so many people in one address. We need to be able to ensure that also the Elections and Boundaries Commission is more independent right now because it is the government that controls it or the party in government. These are some of the issues that we really need to address. We need to strengthened democracy in this country.”
