Police on Road Safety for Motorists

Joseph Myvett

There has been persistent loss of life due traffic accidents since the start of the year, but fortunately a crash on the Hummingbird Highway in Belmopan left five persons nursing minor injuries on Saturday night. In a separate incident in the north, a man crashed on motorcycle and plunged into a creek in the north. These are accidents that could have resulted in fatalities, but the passengers survived. ACP Joseph Myvett says that motorists and users of the highways must be responsible and exercise caution to avoid accidents which can result in death or other serious injuries.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“Aside from the police stepping up our efforts, we have noted that two of those main causes, one is seemingly speeding while the other seems to be alcohol related and there is a third one which is persons riding motorbikes not properly equipped, in that they are not using protective gears. So, those are some of those issues we are looking at in relation to some of these traffic accidents. We have tried to strategize to look at some of the key areas where these accidents are occurring, so we have put in place check points or in certain areas we have put highway patrols in place. We have noted that a number of these accidents are happening at night and that we believe is owing to speeding when you are not having a proper view of the road. So, we are urging those drivers to slow down and stay within the speed limit and to drive carefully. One of the other causes we are seeing is the improper overtaking when you are not able to carefully see the road at night. So, those are some of the issues we see that are causing these traffic accidents. So, we are appealing to the public to slow down and stay within the speed limit and abide by the traffic rules of the road. This, in itself, coupled with the police’s efforts   will be able to minimize some of these accidents on our highways.”
