Bz. policeman detained, released by Guatemalans

In late news from that same location on the border, reports reaching News 5 indicate that around 5:00 this evening a Belizean policeman in the no man’s land between Belize and Guatemala was arrested by Guatemalan authorities and taken off to jail in Melchor de Mencos. The officer has been identified as Ebelio Itza Jr., a resident of nearby San Jose Succotz Village. Little is known about the circumstances under which Itza was arrested, whether he was in uniform or what behaviour may have led to his detention. The Police Department has confirmed only that “an incident has occurred”, but offered no additional details. At news time the officer in charge of the Benque police station was said to be conferring with his counterparts in Melchor de Mencos.

(By the end of the newscast we were informed that Ebelio Itza Jr. was released from detention in Guatemala.)
