NEMO meets as part of hurricane simulation
An exercise to help Belize better prepare for hurricanes commenced today countrywide. Designated “Caribbean Breeze,” the exercise will simulate a hurricane striking the coast and is designed to focus on the efficient operation of shelters. As part of the simulation the National Emergency Management Organisation, NEMO, convened this morning in Belmopan under the chairmanship of Senior Minister George Price. Evaluators will monitor the running of various shelters and will report back to Cabinet. In the aftermath of Hurricane Keith it was found that inadequate management of designate shelters by government was a major weakness in the nation’s hurricane preparedness plan. NEMO has also asked the public to use the exercise as an opportunity to review and update their own hurricane plans for the season beginning June first.
