A UB Building in Honor of Gian Gandhi
The University of Belize has officially renamed its Faculty of Management and Social Science campus in Belize City in honour of the late Gian Gandhi. He is the former Solicitor General and Senior Crown Counsel who donated half a million dollars to UB. President Clement Sankat was on hand this afternoon for the unveiling of a plaque bearing Gandhi’s name. Also in attendance were representatives of the Government of Belize, as well as members of Gandhi’s family. Chairman of UB board of trustees, Harrison Pilgrim, spoke on the symbolism of renaming the West Landivar campus building.
Harrison Pilgrim, Chairman, Board of Trustees, UB
“This is the national university of Belize. This is where we train our youth and not so youthful persons. This is ours and we must, all of us, embrace it, help to build it. This edifice today now bears the proud name of a person who is not a native of Belize but a person who dedicated a lifetime of work within Belize and it is our hope that many of you will find it possible, maybe not to have your name etched on an entire building but perhaps a room or in some other way make your contribution felt. Professor Sankat has an important part of what I call his mantra, that we must not only be a university that is relevant and therefore will produce persons who can help us build the country in the direction that we want it to go, but that in order to do that we must also make sure that the university provides access, access not only for those who may have some money or access to some money, but access to those who are less fortunate financially.”
