Denys Barrow

In 2017, Denys Barrow was officially sworn in as a judge of the Caribbean Court of Justice as the seventh and final member.  Barrow’s impressive judicial career includes service as High Court Judge in Saint Lucia, Grenada, Belize and the British Virgin Islands, Justice of Appeal of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court and Justice of Appeal of the Court of Appeal of Belize from 2010 to 2012. Barrow is back in Belize for a few days for the CAJO conference and he spoke to the media today about his experience on the C.C.J. bench.

“What has change from your days as your role as senior counsel to you role of a judge?”

“The greater responsibility. When you were counsel you argued the side of your client vigorously fully not perhaps excessively but that was your obligation because it was the adversarial system where the lawyer one the other side had the responsibility of arguing his client’s against you. As a judge you have the responsibility of seeing things in balance, of dealing fairly equally with all litigants and conveying to the society is what you are delivering is fair and equal justice to everybody.”
