UDP anoints a candidate in Collet
It’s almost three weeks since the People’s United Party, in a highly controversial race between three well known candidates, selected its standard bearer for the Collet Division. Today the United Democratic Party had a much simpler task as it endorsed twenty-two year old school teacher Patrick Faber as its unopposed nominee to contest the upcoming general elections. Faber chose to officially announced his candidacy amidst the London bridges of the Antelope Street Extension. It is in areas like this that Faber believes he will make a difference.

“I have grown up in the Collet Division. I lived in Collet since I was eleven year old or so, right up since I moved out of my mom’s house about a year ago. So this is my area, I have worked for Faith Babb in this area since 1993, and so I believe I am familiar with the issues and the conditions and dreams of the people here in Collet. That’s why I chose this division.”

“What are you hoping to do to ameliorate their conditions? Just look around, you’ve chosen the right spot for the press conference.”

“Well, Collet is a tough area and you have two areas in Collet, area eighteen, which is not as bad as this one, and area nineteen, and people back here are really, really suffering as you can see indeed. I think a change can come about with a change in the mentality of people. The mentality I may add, was caused by politicians in the first place. So over the next couple of years before the elections, I plan to walk around, to get to know people and try to persuade them that the way to make a change in Collet is for people to participate in it. Politicians have come before me and they have promised people all kinds of things, and rightfully so, when you promise people they expect you to deliver.”
“In fact people say “Why should I vote for you?” and “How do I know you will be different from other politicians?” My answer to that is simply give me a chance.”
The Collet Division has on two occasions been decided by only one vote. The UDP’s Faith Babb edged PUP Remijio Montejo in 1993 and fourteen years earlier V.H. Courtenay beat Ken Tillett by the same narrow margin.
