The Top Scorers for the 2019 CSEC Exams
On November twenty-ninth in Independence Village in the south, Moralez and pate will be honoured along with some four hundred plus students including those who sat the CSEC. Edward P. Yorke High School is walking away with bragging rights after three of its students topped the regional exams. The Most Outstanding Candidate for 2019 is Alexis Guy, who is currently in Benque Viejo; she passed seventeen exams at grade one proficiency level and got first place for English and Business Principles. Dayana Marroquin, who is enrolled at the University of Belize, Belmopan Campus, came second having passed fourteen exams. The third student, eighteen-year-old Angie Matute is from Lord’s Bank; she is the first female to capture the Subject Group Award for Technical/Vocational. Today, News Five caught up with Matute and Guy.

“I was actually very surprised and speechless when I found out. I mean I knew I would have done well cause that’s what I was preparing for, putting in all that hard work, but finding out that I was number one—mind blowing.”

“I guess through this medium, the purpose of me taking this many CXCs is to have a way to pay for my sixth form education because you know if you pass fifteen or more CXCs with grade ones, you get a five thousand-dollar grant for sixth form. So that’s just why I did it.”

“So you are enrolled at the tertiary institution?”

“Yes I am currently attending John Paul Two Junior College in Benque. It is a liberal arts institution and I am majoring in English. Preparing is everything, but it wasn’t done as a me thing. My school played an important role. Our administrators, they are very into upholding CXC records, so they were our biggest motivators along with our teachers who gave us extra classes out of their own free time; after school, during lunch, during break times and even on Saturdays.”

“Congrats, you got first place and I was like “Oh my gosh! I wasn’t even expecting that and I start crying.”

“Talk to us about how you even got into vocational?”
Angie Matute
“Well vocational just caught my attention. I know it is not normal for a girl to actually take those classes, but as I saw them, I wanted to try them, I wanted to challenge them. So I did it and this is the result.”

“Talk to us about the work that you put in to get to this point.”
Angie Matute
“Well it was a lot of hard work, studying all night, doing all my work. Extra classes Saturdays, sometimes even Sundays at school. My teachers were always there helping us so it was a big help to do it. So I am glad that they did. That scholarship is a big relieve because if I didn’t get it, I wasn’t going to continue my studies because I come from a really low-income family so it was going to be really challenging.”

“Well now that is out the door. You have a full scholarship and you are enrolled at the University of Belize in the vocational/technical programme.”

“Yes, I am at UB right now studying architecture and after this I will take this scholarship and go abroad to continue my studies.”
