Thousands rally for Children’s Day
It’s an annual rite of passage for thousands of Belizean students, and while they no longer get the day off or even a bag of goodies, Children’s Day is still a chance for the kids to let off steam and make some noise. Ann-Marie Williams has the story.

The words “Stay in school, don’t be a fool,” echoed the walls of the Belize City Centre as Belize City primary school children from pre-school to middle division celebrated Children’s Day.
Amidst the music and fun, a few moments were spent to savour some positive messages. Francis Baizar of the Ministry of Education reminded the children why today is their special day.
Francis Baizar, Ministry of Education
“As Belizean children who have the right to a name, nationality, to a family structure, freedom of expression, privacy, health, protection and equal education for all, it is important that we the adults and leaders of this country realise and prepare such situations to foster growth, happiness and successful achievements.”
Hundreds of school children came from all corners of the city to take part in the “Stay in School Jam,” some by foot, others bus. For one little girl, getting there was all the fun.

“How was the ride?
Miriam McKoy
“Good because we were all singing in the bus and happy.”
Ann-Marie Williams
“What special day is today?”
Victor Tucios, St. Joseph School
“Children’s day.”
Ann-Marie Williams
“What does that mean to you?”
Victor Tucios
“A day for the children that they get to do some stuff that are fun.”
Amira Abdul Qawiyy, Sis. Clara Muhammad School
“You just don’t have no work to do today. Just sit down and relax.”
Ann-Marie Williams
“Are you enjoying the concert out here?”
Amira Abdul Qawiyy
“Yes ma’am. It’s fun.”
Olive Usher, Buttonwood Bay Nazarene
“It means happiness to me and it gives me joy and make me feel great today. I love D-Revelation’s songs. My mom bought the cassette for me.”
Cashman Munnings, Buttonwood Bay Nazarene
“It’s teaching you to stay in school, don’t be a fool, and teaching you about your rights.”
Ann-Marie Williams
“Are you enjoying Children’s Day? Why?”
Cashman Munnings
“Yes, because it’s a fun thing.”
And although it was a fun thing for the children, one student was able to take time out to remember the fun that one family of children will no longer enjoy.
Ann-Marie Williams
“Is there a special message you’re remembering for Children’s day?”
Brandon Baptist, St. Mary’s School
“Yes, the children that got burned in the fire. If they didn’t burn they would be here with us today.”
The upper division schools had their “Stay in School Jam” this afternoon at the Belize City Centre. Children’s Day activities were held all over the country.
