Hummingbird Highway now complete
Caves Branch now boasts a new bridge as part of the completion of the Hummingbird Highway upgrade. The new road was built by Cisco Construction Company in two phases with work starting in April 1998. The first part of the project, which covered eight miles from the Sibun Bridge to Caves Branch, cost over nine point five million dollars, while the second part extended the road twelve miles from Caves Branch Bridge to the Belmopan junction at a price of fifteen point five million dollars. Financing for the two sections come from the European Union and Caribbean Development Bank respectively. Minister of Works Henry Canton, present at the inaugural ceremonies for the highway, said his ministry is reviewing plans for the construction of a new bridge over the Sibun River to replace the dangerous single lane structure now in use. European Union Representative, Marcel Van Opstal, pledged to find the loan money for the project.
