Khloe Landero Wins the NICH Xmas Card Competition
In November, NICH launched its second annual Christmas Card Competition. Last year they received fewer than five submissions but this year a whopping eighty-five entries were submitted. A young student in Belize City captured the prize and now her winning design will be used for NICH’s 2019 Christmas Card. According to NICH, the winning image was chosen for its artistic composition and message. Reporter Andrea Polanco tells us more about the student and her winning piece.

Khloe Landero, a standard four student of Central Christian School in Belize City, is the winner of NICH’s Christmas Card Competition. Landero found out that she won during a surprise announcement at her school this morning. The young student was overcome with joy and shock – and she couldn’t contain her tears. Khloe Landero says that she used the internet to get some ideas – and then she designed her colourful piece which shows children of different cultures standing around a Christmas wreath decorated with the black orchid. They are joined by Santa Claus carrying presents – depicting the central message that “Everyone deserves a Merry Christmas.”

“There are a lot of cultures in Belize, so my mom told me to put them and put Santa there so that they could get presents from him.”

The winning Christmas Card design is one of eighty-five works of art submitted this year by primary schools across the country. President of NICH Sapna Budrhani says that NICH will now use the winning design for their annual Christmas Card.

“Our goal was to inspire students to participate, to believe in art and know that you can use your art other than just doodling and putting it somewhere but to compete. All students from any school could have submitted their representation of what Christmas is and NICH would then use it as their Christmas Card. The one that is selected would then be used as our Christmas Card and we would then share it with our friends and family and that lucky person is from this school.”
Landero took on the challenge with her family – so her submission was also a surprise to everyone at school. But Principal Kenesha Perry says that her win will motivate the more students to compete next year.

“We will definitely push our teachers and students to participate. I know that it is a motivation for them and now that you see what happens when you put hard work in, so I will definitely be having more students participating next year.”
